Group Tutorial
For feedback and support on completion of project 1, attend the next convenient Project 1 Group Tutorial in the Group Tutorials section.
Select a small number (1-4) one of your paintings or art works produced in project 1 to be discussed at the live session and reflect on the experience in your learning log afterwards.

Upload your chosen painting(s) to the Project 1 Group Forum. The forum is available each month and you can write one post for yourself with all your work on it and some text to help us understand it if you are not going to be present at the zoom meeting.

Either attend the zoom meeting or ensure that your work and text are posted to the forum on time. If numbers are large there may be a reservation activity for the month to manage numbers.

Exercise 3: Painting the Personal.
Paint something that has no personal meaning to you - paint it well.
How can I make these tomatoes extraordinary?
Do I know any interesting facts about the humble tomato?
Do they remind me of anything else?
How can I make them mean more with the way I present them?

Tomato seeds have been making trips to the International Space Station for the past 16 years. Astronauts have grown and tasted different types of lettuce, radishes and chillies and the crew members have now space-grown Red Robin tomatoes. The NASA website introduces me to the Tomatosphere project and how astronauts will be able to grow food to keep them 'space farming' keeping them healthy on their travels. So, tomatoes have been in space!

Exercise 2: Worlding and World Building - Develop three distinct painted characters.
These portraits were inspired by Christine a song by Siouxsie and the Banshees.
This song is about Christine Costner-Sizemore, whose struggles with multiple personality disorders were documented in the book The Three Faces Of Eve, which was written by her psychiatrist. It is a true story.
The story is of Eve White a timid wife, suffering blinding headaches and blackouts. A doctor reveals another personality, Eve Black, a fun-loving extrovert who knows all about her other personality, Eve White. Under hypnosis, a third personality is revealed, Jane. Jane remembers the childhood trauma of the family tradition of kissing a recently deceased relative (her Grandma in an open coffin). This terrible memory is the key to the multiple personality disorder and the Eves are gone leaving just Jane.
I enjoyed the 'Group Crit' as four students and Tom Palin reviewed and critiqued each other's work.
My 'We've been to Space' piece seemed to intrigue students with the use of blending (for the shadow) and, I was asked many questions about the medium, colour and support used.
The narrative and story behind 'The Three Faces of Eve' was well accepted and the Tom Palin suggested the work of Luc Tymuns (which was where I gained some of my inspiration for my marking). The use of body language, colour, eye placement and the emotion the eyes portray was mentioned, along with the clothing choices to accentuate the personalities. For example a pinafore dress for Eve White and, a bodice in black and red colours for Eve Black.
What have I learnt within the group session?

The fundamental importance of artistic critique, but from students and tutors who practice and understand the how and why of what I make.

Each student interprets exercises and research in their own unique way. This is inspiring and makes some of my work seem 'wrong' and not as in-depth as it should be. It makes me want to remake my work. Then in other areas, I have expanded where others didn't. Swings and roundabouts?

Art is subjective and I have my own opinion and so do other people. Each opinion is valid and constructive.

I am beginning to narrow down what I don't like, for example, a story laid out with no intrigue, no puzzle or curiosity and no meaning. Portraits and animals aren't something I necessarily enjoy painting but, I am determined to try a variety of techniques to make sure!

I like textures, ornament, tactility, style and rhythm. I can form patterns and create pictures in abstract pieces, this comes easily and naturally. Is this normal? What is normal?

Images have different purposes within a painting, and how can these ideas relate to my paintings?

What do I want my paintings to be? How much and what do I want to include and say with my work?
