      Assignment 7
Tutorial and Feedback

Now you’ve reached the end of project 7, schedule a feedback session with your personal tutor.

You will need to select a small number of works to discuss, as well as noting down a few questions to ask about your research and progress.

This is an extended submission to give you the opportunity to share your final draft of your critical review.

Submit your selected works, your final draft of your critical review and your questions via this assignment activity along with your feedback preference (video or written) and ensure you have communicated with your tutor to schedule a tutorial.

Questions

I am interested in replicating Ilana Savdie's pitted textured encaustic work. I tried reaching out to her for her process but haven't received a response. I am considering using a mixture of oil paint, wax, and oil medium (as suggested by Tom Palin at a group crit). However, before experimenting, I would like to seek further guidance on this technique.

I am beginning to balance the technical aspects of painting, such as brushwork and texture, with conceptual ideas in my artwork now. I feel like I am growing as an artist. Is the incorporation of contemporary social or cultural issues into my paintings as important at this time, or should I just paint?

Working in series or having a themed body of work, seems fundamental to contemporary painting practices. Is the tondo/lateral view (looking through a small round window) sufficient as a theme?

Can you give me some tips on critiquing my own artwork to identify areas of improvement and growth? I understand that 'leaving work and reflecting', taking work into different spaces, viewing in a mirror/screen or group discussion/critiques are all options.

I am looking at Jasper Johns, Brice Marden and Lynda Benglis as possible notable painters who have influenced the development of the encaustic medium, would you recommend I research any other particular historical painters?

I am interested in different artistic disciplines, such as sculpture /clay and textured works, in my painting practice to create more multidimensional artworks. Do you think I should pursue this avenue further?

I am unsure whether to title the painting 'In the Gutter' or 'Chaos'.

(These pieces require framing, additional material or support. They are works in progress at this time).
