Encaustic
A starter kit is always the way to start, no? Well, It was certainly exciting! I watched many YouTube videos on the process and decided to begin gingerly.

The instructions were fairly easy, and the process was enjoyable. I felt like I was cooking rather than painting.
Materials.
I used clay, paper and encaustic boards (provided in the kit).
What did I learn?
I love this process because it's so versatile. I can scrape, sgraffito, collage, overlay, blend, heat, add pigment, reheat etc.... the list goes on and on!
The material (beeswax and resin) is claggy, almost like chocolate. It takes a little getting used to.
I asked my peers if they had used it (via a WhatsApp group) and learnt a few tips about adding pigment or shellac overcoats.
I didn't want a 'twee' way of working and decided to use stencilling, broad brush strokes and splashes. I added gold leaf, which sticks without sizing the surface (result!)
The results were varied (tests). This is a tester, and I will continue this process. I like the encaustic technique. Can I use it to discover the landscape? I definitely think so.
Two small embedded (with blossom drawings from a market in Shanghai) that I will reflect on as there is too much going on.
Wax on, Wax off
