My initial response and reflection on the module/course.

The excitement has returned, a new module and the initial 'butterflies' just at the thought of reading through the exercises has returned.

I am more organised now and have downloaded 'Part One of UPM' from the OCA website, uploaded and populated my blog, and I am researching even before it arrives.

I am taking notes on each section of the course before I even start. I want to get a feel of the study, expectation and where I can develop my independence.The course seems to guide me towards that artistic independence and a coherent context. I mean, my artworks presented as a whole.

I am already questioning, reflecting, exploring, researching, dreaming, and thinking about the course's different aspects. I want to take risks and push myself but still be selective and fulfill the brief. I want to keep in mind the feedback from my previous tutors and their pointers as I develop.

I think I will be freer to express myself on this course and become more in tune with the materials and understand how I can communicate my concepts.

I can see how my confidence, work, practice and learning has progressed and developed.

My subject matter and experimentation regarding new techniques and approaches to painting has flourished. This experimental journey underpins my interest in the concept of 'looking through, up, down or out and the various 'ways of looking' within the abstract style I am drawn to.

I make marks with a more considered approach now and discerning eye. I am conscious of my decisions now and not overwhelmed with the pathway I am on.

I do need to be true to my inner self as I approach this new module. I feel drawn to abstraction, Abstract Expressionism in particular, but how can I up my game and make my work intriguing with these processes or influences?

I can see that this module brings other elements into play for example;

  • Greater depth of exploration into certain chosen media.

  • The knowledge of the history and context of a range of painting media.

  • Developing my personal responses through critical review.

  • Essay writing (I am filled with dread at the prospect of this!)

Because I have completed the Drawing and Painting modules before UPM, I feel I have the necessary skills to continue to develop my practice with more confidence.

I have also been fortunate enough to have entered (and been selected by Grayson Perry) for Channel 4's Grayson Perry's Art Club and will be in the exhibition. To have spoken to Grayson Perry on a Zoom call to talk about my art (yes my art!) was a highlight and massive confidence builder. I am so overwhelmed by the response I have had to my artwork. I have written a student story about the experience so far.

Well let's see where this module takes me, shall we?

“Creativity takes courage.”
