This is a written self-assessment and digitalised notebook note of each of the assignments.

It notes successes and problems or areas for development that need to be resolved.

Quick thoughts and mind maps, artists of interest and techniques to remember.

It keeps in mind that the aims of this unit/module are to:

LO1 explore a range of painting media techniques

LO2 use a range of techniques to develop your own practice

LO3 demonstrate research into visual ideas using a broad range of sources

LO4 Understand the historical and contemporary contexts that inform your practice.

Part one Using found images

1.1 Painting thin and small

1.2 Black and white

1.3 Quick and focused

1.4 Look at what you see - not what you imagine

Learning.

The different layering experiments are introducing me to new techniques producing atmosphere within my work.

Planning my media for specific subjects is key to the outcomes created.

Loose application of paint and considered tonal value bring the best results.

Consider, reflect and develop on painting upside-down images by looking at shapes.

Development.

Curate images so they aren't muddled.

Use the artists' full names first and then surname.

Be aware of why I am making decisions when it comes to composition i.e. macro and micro.

Carry my experiments and discovery through to the final assignment piece.

Be aware of tightening up for the final assignment piece.

Overall Reflection.

I am disappointed with my self in several areas and need to up my game in my contextual research.

My Key learning.

LO2 use a range of techniques to develop your own practice- Look at what you see not what you imagine.

Tutor comment 'This technique is to be encouraged as you move forward when copying further images. Lots learnt here, so remember to build on what you have learnt as you move forward.'

My notes.

My Cathy Lomax response work is confident. (Sketchbook entry work)

LO4 Understand the historical and contemporary contexts that inform your practice?

PART TWO

Unusual materials - collections

Learning.

Investigation of tonal range in Hanging around, build on this and develop it by taking areas I like and working on them.

Rendez -Shoe for the rendering of form and the cast shadows and palette that work well together having a development plan with Andy Warhol (in my sketchbook) having determination with instinct and reflection working towards the final piece. The shoes are relating things to each other, this shows imagination as well as an openness to the brief.

Development.

Look at more contemporary artists look at their mark-making and see what I like or dislike and why.

Explore the materiality of paint more and look at what I have created and edit colour or composition to create different results.

Question the writing and papers I am reading are they relevant now?

Overall Reflection.

Overall I am delighted with my feedback. I am not completely on the wrong track, a few rookie mistakes but overall I seem to be developing. I seem to be losing my way with the energy and passion I have always displayed in my sketchbooks. This can be visually noticed in my sketchbook entries. I want to explore the marvels of paint and am enthusiastic to delve into mono-printing and all it has to offer. Editing my palette and composition is key and researching more contemporary work from the various booksand resources I have in my possession.

My Key learning.

LO3 demonstrate research into visual ideas using a broad range of sources.

LO2 use a range of techniques to develop your own practice.

I feel the Rendez-shoe picture is strong and displays visual concepts which have been explored and a varied range of techniques applied to reach the final piece.

My notes.

Take more risks, experiment look at contemporary artists mark-making and use it to inform my practice.

PART Three

monotype portraits with paint

I feel I have gained confidence in my artists' research and how I evaluate ideas and move them forward.

Understanding composition and materials handling have been a challenge but finally, I seem to be progressing. My evaluation and documentation skills are becoming more fluent. My experiences are starting to be part of my contextual application.

Learning.

My assignment contains a thorough and articulate explanation of my process, context and working methods. Experimental discovery before commitment promotes my development here.

The final piece is concentrated yet open to new ways of handling paint using a printing technique and the artist influences are seen to be coming through the work. The idea of presenting flight as well as being grounded is strong with reflecting on the experience.

Development.

Harvard Reference in text, any quotes or artists statements in my writing, as well as putting them in my bibliography.

Looking closely at how artists make work will assist my development in pushing my work.

The theme of my experience is personal and works well, continue along this concept.

Overall Reflection.

I'm a paragraph. Click here to add your own text and edit me. It's easy.

My Key learning.

TimeZones Assignment Three for its presentation flight in addition to being grounded.

LO1 explore a range of painting media techniques from the new ways of handling paint within the context of printmaking.

LO2 use a range of techniques to develop your own practice. Using varied printing and overpainting techniques to evoke atmosphere or emotion.

LO3 demonstrate research into visual ideas using a broad range of sources. Seeing work first-hand at exhibitions develops my practice.

LO4 Understand the historical and contemporary contexts that inform your practice.

Seeing close hand how artists use paint I adopt ways of reflecting what I see in my own work. Varying and applying paint in different ways and understanding how other artists approach the work they make, assist me to use this information and push my own concepts forward.

Monotypes in exercise 3.2 and the sketchbook entry - Dumas and Kevan's

LO1 explore a range of painting media techniques from the new ways of handling paint

For the wide-reaching outcomes within the exercise.

‘Dude in jacket' for its complexity and balance in terms of leaving white space in places and easy viewing with a limited palette.

Sascha the vampire 2 - For its confidence with materials. A developing ability to omit areas.

Monotypes.

LO1 explore a range of painting media techniques

LO2 use a range of techniques to develop your own practice

Vix in Pink and Green, for its interesting, complexity and space so as not to overcomplicate the work.

Unfinished work allows a reduction in marks with less information.

Trace Roid for its confident composition.

Zombie Roid, Jetlag and Roid 1 in Mauve for their resolution.

Ja-red- blue-green-yellow, for its striking composition.

Exercise 3.3 Monotype and the removal method.

LO4 Understand the historical and contemporary contexts that inform your practice.

Using visual stimulation from contemporary artists can stimulate my imagination. For example Njideka Akunyili Crosby's use of mixed media and complex layers.

My notes.

Continue with the theme from my experiences.

Be confident i.e. squiggly marks, omitting areas.

Don't overwork pieces.

Consider what the paint will do through using a range of broader brushes.

Part four

The tondo - domestic interior

Use the open experimental pieces in my sketchbook and refer to them in my log by link.

Use this underworked quality of these entries as an influence on my work.

My investigations into process, materials and the development of an idea are all moving forward.

Learning.

I'm learning that less is more and I do not have to put all my ideas into the assignment piece for example.

Keep considering and taking time to reflect on my work.

Development.

To develop I need to edit and reduce my overcomplicated images. Critique my own work more.

Overall Reflection.

How can the paint, work in new ways for me.? Explore this.

My theme has somehow been lost in space and time and I need to go back and find it!

Connect my palette and painterly approach to work conceptually/contextually.

My Key learning.

LO1 explore a range of painting media techniques

The sketchbook entries for this part of the course for their open and expressive qualities.

LO2 use a range of techniques to develop your own practice

Adventitious series using blending, crosshatching and burnishing.

LO3 demonstrate research into visual ideas using a broad range of sources

Exhibition visit and specific works by Mary Newcombeconcidering her quick studies and palette which align with my own concerns.

Reading the Poetics of Space has allowed me time to consider the more contextual considerations of space.

My notes.

Stop and think.

Reflect, consider and breathe in between work.

Try working on several pieces at once?

Go back and dip in and out of book that resonate with my practice.

Part five

The Paper Museum

I have extensively explored my ideas and work in this final section. I need to be aware of discerning my work for curation and to try and delve deeper into concepts and techniques that interest me.

Learning.

I have learned to use fluid and sensitive marks in a very confident and assured way. I have learned the process of cyanotypes and how rewarding it is.

Development.

I am developing my personal voice and considering other artists techniques and processes and how I can take them further.

I have developed my written application to a subject and how I can now consider and edit my writing within a brief.

Overall Reflection.

I feel that I need to be less inclusive of all the knowledge I am absorbing. Taking one area of technique process or artist research further, rather than trying to use everything at once.

My Key learning.

LO1 explore a range of painting media techniques

LO2 use a range of techniques to develop your own practice

LO3 demonstrate research into visual ideas using a broad range of sources.

Exercise 5.1

My sketchbook entries, garden photographs for inspiration. I used salt over watercolour to gain organic and fluid markings of tone in a very confident and assured way.

LO3 demonstrate research into visual ideas using a broad range of sources

LO4 Understand the historical and contemporary contexts that inform your practice.

My notes.

Try delving deeper into areas that interest me.

Strip things back and stop adding more, more, more.

Be selective.
