My tutors feedback is in black text my reflection is in orange.
Overall feedback
This has been a very fluent and enquiring submission. You have worked extremely hard throughout and have gained confidence in your artists research and evaluation of ideas as you have move forward. You are starting to understand composition and materials handling and have been critical regarding knowing what has worked and what hasn’t. I have really enjoyed the journey with you, as you have documented the process of making your outcomes extremely thoroughly. It’s been good to see you starting to come into the work too. Very well done Martine.
I am happy that my enquiring mind has been noticed! This was a challenge and I feel that my hard work is starting to pay off.
Feedback based on Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate through practical exercises experimentation with a range of painting media, techniques and surfaces.
Where you have working immediately, as Dumas’s video the outcomes are both direct and uncontrolled. There is the sense of the person you are painting and compositionally some of them work well. It has been good to see you select and separate the successful away from what you consider the less successful, a good start, well done. As you move forward you recognise that sometimes less is more. Again, the works such as Vix in Pink and Green, for me feel interesting, complex yet do maintain the space needed to not overwork the work. Keeping a sense of the; unfinished’ in a work has allowed you to stay with reduced marks and less information. Trace Roid compositionally is confident, Zombie Roid, Jetlag and Roid 1 in mauve feel much more resolved. You have expressed a liking for Ja-red- blue-green-yellow, this is compositionally very striking, well done for all your effort here, a great series of works. The final assignment contains a lot of work and you have been thorough and articulate when talking and showing process, context and working methods. You have been experimental before committing and have learnt a lot through doing s. The final piece is concentrated yet open to new ways of handling paint using a printing technique and the artists influences are seen to be coming through the work, well done. The idea of presenting flight as well as being grounded and you have been very thorough throughout regarding reflecting on the experience. Well done.
When my work is presented in a gallery all together, I begin to see that I have indeed used the monoprinting technique in a varied and 'unfinished style'. I am happy with these pieces.
Demonstrate the ability to use a broad range of techniques and to offer highly experimental and personal responses in your work.
For exercise 3.2 You have worked tirelessly to gain different effects for differing monotypes. The work undertaken has been documented extremely thoroughly and you have been articulate when writing about what worked and what didn’t. You have tuned in well to looking at the techniques used by Annie Kevan’s and Marlene Dumas. ‘Dude in jacket’ works well as it is both complex yet balanced in terms of leaving white space in places and the limited palette allows for easy viewing of the subject. Sascha the vampire 2 works better for me as a viewer too. The squiggly marks and ability to leave things out exudes confidence with your materials. Where you haven’t overworked for me feels like the strongest work, well done as this is very experimental and wide reaching in terms of outcome.
Research visual ideas from a wide range of sources and develop these ideas through critical review and art practice into a concentrated personal project .
You are starting to be more critical in your evaluation of work and are making some key decisions around the work through making a lot of work and selecting ones that you consider to be the most successful. You are seeing close hand how artists use paint and have adopted ways of reflecting what you see in your own work. Varying and applying paint in different ways has allowed you to understand how other artists approach the work they make, and it is easy to see where you adopt some of this information as well as push your own ideas forward. You work best when you consider what the paint will do through using a range of broader brushes. Your textural gestures are coming through the final selection of works, well done, I can see your confidence growing through hard work and focus.
'You work best when you consider what the paint will do through using a range of broader brushes'. This is a stand out comment and one that I can move forward with and develop.
I am beginning to see more clearly and gain confidence in my approach.
Research and understand the role of history and context in relation to a personal project.
The first research point has been done very thoroughly and you have articulated your own thoughts coherently and confidently throughout. Printing onto old books has aligned your subject matter very nicely and where you introduce graphite powder the image becomes stronger. Using Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s methods into the work makes this work contemporary. The white line around the profile of the face separates the foreground from the background, well done. It’s good to see you take a personal viewpoint bringing your past experiences around flight and bringing this into the work, well done. It has been good to see you out and about and you have managed to document Portrayals really well. It is easy to see you looking at the details of how artists paint and the wide scope has been articulated very well in your learning log, well done.
Action points.
• Remember to Harvard Reference in text, any quotes or artists statements that you have found as you are writing, as well as putting them in your bibliography.
Having read 31 pages of the O.C.A. Harvard Reference brief I could kick myself!!!
• Continue to look closely at how artists make work as this has really pushed your work this time.
I will endeavour to continue to push my work forward with this feedback.
• Continue to work to a theme in order to develop your own voice, well done, this has been an extremely thorough submission.
My experience and theme comes easily, I can be confident to develop this moving forward.
