This piece happened relatively quickly. I was channelling Lynda Benglis, Morris Loius, Jackson Pollock, and Franenthaler for their pouring techniques. Some parts I built up, some parts I splattered, and some I made hot melted wax that was absorbed into the surface.

Materials:

  • Glue gun

  • Encaustic wax

  • Cut-out board stuck to the surface.

  • Acrylic paint.

  • Various brushes.

Wince (W.IP.)

Wax and molten glue on cake board 35cm diameter.

What have I learnt?

  • Varied applications of wax, from pours to dabbing with a sponge, create a mottled surface effect.

  • Glue and wax are comparable. Strands of molten glue adhere to wax and make thin strands of texture which is pleasing.

  • Using varied colours of underlying colour makes dimension and depth more prominent.

  • Wax can be buffed to a high gloss finish.

I feel that 'Wince' is unfinished. I will come back to this and add more structure, balance and geometric form. It needs something, but now I can put my finger on what that is. The piece also needs buffing to a high gloss shine with the correct cloth (a microfibre cloth).
