What have I produced and learnt?
To apply the elements of visual language to my abstract paintings, I can start by experimenting with each component individually and then combining them in various ways.
Can the way paint is applied be meaningful?
Can it convey a feeling?
I think so, yes. I believe Rothko's work 'Breathes' and Kandinsky's painting 'Sings'.
This application involves exploring different uses of line, shape, colour, texture, value, and space in my compositions and considering how these elements interact and communicate to create visual impact and convey the meaning I want to express. By researching other artists, I can learn varied techniques and push the boundaries of the elements of visual language in my abstract paintings. I can promote my personal growth by experimenting with unconventional materials and exploring new ways of applying paint or creating texture.
By immersing myself in the works of artists like Mondrian, Virgoe, and Richter, I've realised that I've grasped their artistic language and can confidently engage with it. This newfound understanding has sparked excitement, as I look forward to incorporating their influence into my creative journey and evolving uniquely.

Ilana Savdie's work (introduced by my tutor) and her use of encaustic wax led me to research Lynda Benglis and her biomorphic approach.
Julian Brown's exploration of patterns and repetition added another layer of complexity and visual interest to my research. I continued using circles, a powerful symbol in various cultural and historical contexts, considering their associations with unity, cycles, and interconnectedness.
I drew varied inspiration from Mondrian's precise arrangements of geometric shapes, Richter's emphasis on gesture and movement, and Brown's intricate patterns. Virgoe's muted colour hues with the veiled application add knowledge to my expanding toolbox.

By challenging traditional notions of composition and embracing risk-taking, I can explore uncharted territories in my artistic practice while maintaining a solid foundation in the elements of visual language.

In addition to exploring the elements of visual language, colour harmony, contrast, temperature, value, saturation, and the psychological effects of colour assist me in creating more intentional and impactful colour relationships in my abstract compositions. The design also plays a crucial role in abstract painting, with different arrangements of shapes and lines. I now consider the placement of focal points and create a sense of movement or rhythm in my work. Finding a balance between spontaneity and control, building unity within the composition, and effectively communicating meaning or emotion without explicit representation is becoming easier to interpret and convey a sense of visual language.

As I progress with my degree, abstract art serves as a guiding force, allowing me to unlock my artistic potential. With abstract artists, their processes, and the intricate details of their work, I find the freedom to explore, interpret, and communicate my innermost thoughts and emotions.
